Javier Herrero and David Gies Talk About the Early Years at UVA

Filmed in Javier Herrero’s home in Charlottesville in March of 2017, he and David share some stories (in Spanish!) about the early years, from their daily lunches in Javier’s office and how they attracted so many good people to come to UVA, starting with novelist Carmen Martín Gaite, whose love of celebrating Halloween with UVA students and the children of Charlottesville is one the many great memories they share. Their friendship formed the basis of the excellence in teaching and research and a supportive learning and working environment that have been the hallmarks of Spanish, Italian and Portuguese at UVA.
